Mathew Knowles producing Destiny's Child musical set to premiere in Houston
HOUSTON (FOX 26) - As their manager, Mathew Knowles helped Destiny's Child grow from Houston sweethearts to international stars.
Now, he's ready to tell the group's story through a musical that he promises will be honest and vulnerable.
In an exclusive interview with Fox 26, Knowles spoke about bringing the iconic group's story to the stage.
"We wanted to ensure that we got their blessing," he said. "And they can have as much input as they would like."
The musical will be told through Knowles' perspective himself, and is being co-produced by Houston native and playwright Je'Caryous Johnson. The narrative starts as early as Girl's Tyme in the early 1990s, following the various lineup changes and their rise to stardom.
It also addresses Mathew's marriage with Tina Knowles, and their daughter Solange.
"Sometimes she was lost, forgotten, and that affected her," Knowles admitted.
Although the musical is being produced for Broadway and London's West End, it will first premiere in Houston in 2020.
"You might see some former members cast in the play," he said. "I don't want to give it away!"
Right now, Knowles is finishing the script. He also plans to release a book, Destiny's Child, the Untold Story, before the end of the year.
A new album featuring un-released music the girls recorded at just ten and eleven years old is also in the works.
