Deputy Chief Fire Marshal and FBI agent both killed in I-270 crash in Montgomery County

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Officials have identified the two off-duty officers who were killed Friday following a violent crash on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer says 33-year-old Sander Cohen is one of the two who were killed. He was a Lieutenant with the Rockville Volunteer Fire Department and a Maryland State Police Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office Deputy Chief.

The second officer has been identified as 36-year-old Supervisory Special Agent Carlos Wolff, who is an 11-year FBI veteran. He worked for the Criminal investigation division at FBI Headquarters.

Officials say Special Agent Wolff died after being taken to Suburban Hospital. Deputy Chief State Fire Marshal Cohen died at the scene.

Montgomery County police said the multi-vehicle crash happened on southbound I-270 between Falls and Montrose roads in the Rockville area at about 10 p.m.

Officials say Deputy Chief Cohen contacted Maryland State Police and requested assistance for a single-car crash in the fast lane of southbound I-270, north of Gude Drive. They say Deputy Chief Cohen found the man in the accident, and identified himself as off-duty FBI Special Agent Wolff, who had a crashed in his 2002 Acura SUV. 

Deputy Chief Cohen used his personal car to block oncoming traffic and turned on his emergency flashers, placing him in an official capacity at that time.

According to police, the two off-duty officers moved their cars to the shoulder of the fast lane and were standing nearby when an oncoming car, a Honda Accord, going southbound swerved to the left and struck both men.

Both men were thrown over the jersey wall to the northbound side of I-270, where officials say it appears at least one of them was struck by a northbound vehicle, an Acura sedan.

There have been no injuries reported with any driver or passenger of the cars that hit the two men.

Investigators say preliminarily, they do not believe alcohol was involved in the two crashes. Maryland State Police Crash team is investigating.

Investigators say no charges have been filed at this time.
