Tropical Weather Forecast - July 19, 2023
Tropical Storm Don has gotten a little stronger out in the north central Atlantic with 45 mph winds as it moves west. It will eventually turn NW but is expected to remain over the water. Another tropical wave still close to Africa has developed in the eastern Atlantic with only a 20% shot for development over the next 7 days. Calvin is no longer a tropical cyclone as it has become post-tropical as it pulls away from the big Island of Hawaii. Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean remain quiet for now.

The tropics are quiet for now across the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. However, we are still tracking Tropical Storm Don in the North Central Atlantic which is not expected to be a threat to land anytime soon. Tropical Storm Calvin is bearing down on the Big Island of Hawaii tonight and Wednesday with a Tropical Storm Warning in place. Heavy rain, big surf, and gusty winds are likely.

Tropical Depression Don remains in the central Atlantic basically making a big loop and is not a threat to land at this time. It is forecast to become a tropical storm by Wednesday. Calvin is now a tropical storm in the Central Pacific and could be a threat to the big Island of Hawaii by Wednesday. Things remain quiet in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico but the busiest part of hurricane season is right around the corner. So take time to review your hurricane plan and make sure you are ready!

Waters in the Gulf, Caribbean & Atlantic are unusually warm which could be a big problem as we get closer to the most active part of hurricane season. That would be August and September. Right now Saharan dust is hindering major tropical development in the Atlantic Basin but that is expected to change over the coming weeks. There is one system in the central Atlantic 900 miles east of Bermuda that could become TD #5 or Tropical Storm Don over the next few days. But it is expected to stay away from the US as it tracks north. In the eastern Pacific, Calvin has become the third hurricane of the eastern Pacific season and could get close to Hawaii by the middle of next week bringing higher waves and heavy rain.

The tropics are heating up with one system in the central Atlantic with a medium chance for development. It is moving east away from the US for now but could become Tropical Storm Don soon. Tropical Storm Calvin has developed in the eastern Pacific with 50 mph winds and is forecast to become a hurricane by Thursday. It is moving away from Mexico and the US.

Things are still quiet in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. But there's one area in the Central Atlantic being monitored for possible development. There's a 30% chance of a tropical or subtropical cyclone developing NE of Bermuda over the next 7 days. Eastern Pacific is still fairly active with a system south of the southern Mexican coast with a high chance of development over the next 7 days. Another system offshore of SW Mexico has a medium chance for development over the next few days. But it is moving away from the US and Mexico.

The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Atlantic are still very quiet with no tropical cyclone activity expected over the next 7 days. Saharan dust continues to hinder development even though water temperatures are extremely warm. We are expecting things to get more active over the next month or two so stay alert! In the eastern Pacific, two systems have a high chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm. One could become a named storm tonight or tomorrow while the other will likely take a little longer. Calvin and Dora are the next two names on the list for eastern Pacific storms.

All is quiet in the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Atlantic with Saharan dust helping to hinder tropical cyclone development for now. But water temperatures are very warm and that could aid in development over the next few weeks. There are two areas of low pressure in the eastern Pacific that have a high chance for development over the next week. But they are moving away from Mexico and the US for now.

The big news today is that the official Colorado State University hurricane season outlook was updated for a second time since April. Forecasters are now calling for 18 named storms, 9 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes due to the unusually warm waters of the tropical Atlantic 4-6 degrees above normal. At this point, the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico & Caribbean are quiet with no tropical cyclone formation expected for the next 7 days. But things are expected to get a lot more active in August and September which is usually the most active period of hurricane season. The eastern pacific is more active with two broad areas of low pressure off the S/SW Mexican coast. They both have a shot to become a tropical depression or storm over the next 7 days.

Saharan dust continues to mix in some drier air in the atmosphere hindering tropical development in the Atlantic. Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean remain quiet as well with no tropical cyclone formation expected over the next 7 days. There are a few disturbances to monitor in the eastern Pacific though. Once has a high chance to become a tropical depression south of the SW Mexican coast over the next week.

However, there's a 60 % chance for a tropical depression to develop in the eastern Pacific over the next 7 days. The area of concern is off of the SW Mexican coast. The most active part of hurricane season has not arrived. It's usually in August and September. So stay alert and review your hurricane plan with your family while things are quiet.

Tropical Weather Forecast - June 30, 2023
Most of the action remains in the Eastern Pacific with not one but two hurricanes. There's hurricane Beatriz which is now a Category 1 off of the SW coast of Mexico where some hurricane warnings are in effect. Beatriz will creep closer to Cabo San Lucas early next week but should be weaker by then. Hurricane Adrian is a strong Category 2 in the E. Pacific but is expected to stay over the water as it moves NW away from Mexico. In the SW Atlantic a weak area of low pressure has a tiny chance to develop into a tropical system as it gets closer to Bermuda.

There's a disturbance in the SW Atlantic that has a very low chance for tropical cyclone development over the next 2-7 days as it gets closer to Bermuda. In the eastern Pacific, it's very active with newly formed Tropical Storm Beatriz near SW Mexico & Hurricane Adrian. The Gulf of Mexico & Caribbean remain quiet for now.

Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea are quiet with no tropical cyclones expected to form over the next few days. Area of disturbed weather in SW Atlantic is being monitored for tropical development. There's only a 10-20% chance over the next 2-7 days. Adrian has become a hurricane in the Eastern Pacific but is not a threat to Mexico or the United States as it is moving west.
