Two-alarm fire at Ridge Point Apartments damages several units, families displaced

HOUSTON - A two-alarm fire displaced residents at the Ridge Point Apartments on Saturday. The fire broke out around 4:20 a.m. at the complex on the 2700 block of Westridge in southwest Houston. Fortunately, first responders said no one was injured in the fire. 

"I saw a fire just raging," said Asianna Daniels, a resident in the apartment. 

Residents worked together to warn their neighbors of the fire.

"So I just started knocking and getting neighbors up, letting them know," said Daniels.

The Houston Fire Department said strong winds caused the fire to grow stronger. One resident describes when he witnessed firefighters helping a neighbor to safety. 

"The person they said started the fire, she was up there on her balcony. She came out late. It had been blazing. She had came out. She's looking where the fire was from, but it started in her apartment. So they telling her to jump down, but she was severely burnt," said Davion Perry, another resident in the complex. "So they had to climb up there and get her and bring her down."

Residents who were looking forward to the holidays are now having to rebuild their lives. 

"We’re right before the new years, right before the holidays and just to, everything of theirs is gone. I really feel for them," said Daniels. 

According to the American Red Cross for the Texas Gulf Coast, 16 units were impacted. They are working to help those who have been displaced get to a safe shelter so they can begin recovery.

The Houston Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
