DEER PARK - The death of the man whose body was found amid the La Porte pipeline fire last year has been ruled a suicide, according to Deer Park police.

In a press release, Deer Park police say the Harris County Medical Examiners Office concluded their investigation into the death of 51-year-old Jonathan McEvoy. The examiners' office ruled McEvoy's death "with a finding of suicide by blunt traumatic and thermal injuries."
Deer Park police was conducting a criminal investigation into the September 2024 crash, but they decided to close it after receiving the examiner's report. They say the investigation didn't identify any co-conspirators or any other chargeable criminal offenses.

The backstory:
The pipeline fire happened on September 16, 2024, near the intersection of Spencer Highway and Canada Road. The fire burned for days before it was completely extinguished.
At the scene, authorities recovered human remains that were found in a charred vehicle. The Harris County Medical Examiner's identified that person as 51-year-old Jonathan McEvoy Sr. of Deer Park, Texas.
