Houston ISD reveals details on new weapon detection system in some high schools

A new metal detection system will soon roll out at several Houston ISD high schools after multiple weapons have been found on campus this school year.

Lamar, Bellaire, and Northside High School students, staff and visitors will be required to go through the Open Gate System.

What is the Open Gate System?

What we know:

According to HISD, it is the same technology used at most concerts and sporting events. It’s designed to alert to larger metal objects.

Students won’t have to take off their backpacks, only their laptops, so HISD says it’s intended to be a quick process.

Superintendent Mike Miles claims they’ll be able to get 600 students through in a matter of 30 minutes.

Why is this happening?

The backstory:

Throughout this school year, multiple weapons have been found on several HISD campuses, including Lamar High School.

One student has been charged with bringing a handgun with an extended magazine inside the school in October.

When will this start?

What's next:

Superintendent Miles adds they are only starting this with high schools and will evaluate the need for middle school campuses next school year if the budget allows.

What we don't know:
