ERCOT issues Weather Watch from Jan. 6-10 due to cold weather forecasted

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a Weather Watch from Jan. 6 to Jan. 10 due to anticipated cold weather across the Southeast Texas region, an expected increase in electricity demand, and the possibility of lower energy reserves.

ERCOT operates the state’s power grid and says the alert came due to an expected forecast of significant weather and high demand.

The organization expects grid conditions to remain normal during this period even though they are keeping a close eye on conditions.

What is a Weather Watch?

It is an advance notice of significant weather conditions that could lead to higher electrical demand and reduced energy reserves. While there is no current expectation of an energy emergency, Texans are encouraged to stay informed about real-time and extended grid conditions through the ERCOT website.

There will be winds moving in and they will be blustery with speed of 15 to 20 mph, but gusts could be up to 30 mph. With the winds, it will feel like temperatures will be in the teens and 20s.

A freeze warning has been issued from midnight tonight until 9 a.m. Monday. A cold weather advisory has been issued from midnight tonight until 11 a.m. Monday.

Make sure that you dress in layers, bring your pets inside and cover any sensitive plants. Next week, you can expect highs in the 40s and lows near freezing. The chance of wintery precipitation is very low, but we are watching how things will develop towards the end of the week when a coastal low approaches.

What do Texans need to do?

No immediate action is required from Texans. However, ERCOT recommends monitoring grid conditions and being mindful of energy usage, especially during peak demand hours.
