Deputies: Cemetery worker stole veteran's wallet from urn, bought pizza
BUSHNELL (FOX 13) - Deputies say an employee at Florida National Cemetery is behind bars after he swiped the wallet of a dead World War II veteran and used it to buy pizza.
The 93-year-old veteran, whom deputies did not name, was interred back on April 15. According to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, the veteran's family was recently resolving his financial affairs when they noticed credit card charges on his account that dated back to that very day.
The reported their discovery to cemetery administrators and deputies, which led investigators to cemetery employee Kevin A. Cullen. When questioned Monday, deputies say Cullen said he took the veteran's wallet from the urn before burial, threw everything away except for the credit card, and then used the card to order pizza and video game cards.
Cullen, 33, faces several charges including theft, identity fraud, and disturbing a grave. He is being held on $11,000 bond.
Investigators said the veteran in this case had served in the U.S. Navy as a torpedoman in the Atlantic during World War II.
