12-year-old shot by celebratory gunfire near Sharpstown
HOUSTON - A 12-year-old girl is in stable condition after being hit by a stray bullet during celebratory gunfire, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPS Sgt. Ali reports the young girl and her mother were walking to their apartment complex when the 12-year-old was struck by a stray bullet.
While the mother was carrying her daughter, a neighbor saw them and jumped in to help, police say. He put the two in his car and drove them to the hospital.
However, Sgt. Ali states, while they were driving on the wet roadway, the car became involved in a minor crash with another vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and saw the 12-year-old girl injured with a gunshot wound in the vehicle.

Houston Fire Department personnel took the girl and her mother from the crash site to a nearby trauma center. The child is now reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities are investigating the incident.
