Brazoria County deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas shot, killed in Houston

A Brazoria County deputy was shot and killed in Houston on Wednesday while attempting to serve a warrant.

The sheriff identified the fallen deputy as Jesus Jesse Vargas.

Deputy Vargas was with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years.

He was married and had three children.

Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman described Vargas as a "very dedicated servant to Brazoria County."

He was working as a member of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force at the time of the shooting, officials say.

The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office released a statement about Deputy Vargas on Wednesday afternoon.

"We are deeply saddened to share the loss of Deputy Jesus Vargas, who faithfully served the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office for 17 years. Deputy Vargas was shot and killed in the line of duty. He was a dedicated public servant, known for his integrity, compassion, and commitment to our community.

He was more than a team member—he was a friend, mentor, and inspiration to everyone who knew him. His professionalism and kind nature left a lasting impact on our office and the residents he served.

Our hearts go out to Deputy Vargas’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We also stand with our Sheriff’s Office family as we grieve this loss together.

We would like to thank HPD for pursuing this investigation for the suspect in this heinous act. We will release information on the BCSO Facebook page regarding memorial and remembrance services.

Brazoria County deputy killed in Houston

The backstory:

Deputy Vargas was shot and killed near Stella Link Road and I-610 in southwest Houston on Wednesday.

Deputy Vargas was attempting to apprehend a "repeat violent offender," Houston mayor John Whitmire said.

The suspect shot him as he approached to serve the warrant, the mayor says.

Manhunt underway for Robert Lee Davis III

Robert Lee Davis III aka Sean Christopher Davis

What's next:

A manhunt is underway for the suspect near the shooting scene.

Police identified him as 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis III, also known as Sean Christopher Davis.

He is described as a Black male, around 200 pounds and 5’10" tall. He was last seen wearing a blue Nike hoodie with white lettering, blue jeans and blue sneakers.

A Blue Alert has been issued for Davis.
