Houston weather: Severe weather chances on Sunday
HOUSTON - Sunday will be a FOX 26 Storm Alert Day, with the potential for strong to severe storms in the Houston area.
What We Know: High temperatures are expected to be in the mid 70s on Sunday and moisture will be moving in from the Gulf.
That combination will create instability in our atmosphere.
Storms are likely on Sunday afternoon, including the potential for some that could be strong to severe.
The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center has the area north of I-10 and east of I-45 as the highest risk for severe storms.
That area is a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather scale. Most of the Houston area is a 1 out of 5.
We could see heavy rain, lightning, strong winds and even a shot an an isolated tornado.
Please stay weather-aware on Sunday.
Timeline: We expect to see showers and isolated thunderstorms through mid-morning.
The afternoon is when we expect our severe chances to be highest. We could see some rotating thunderstorms and even isolated tornadoes.
From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. is when the risks are highest.
Freezing Temps Next Week?
As the storms move out, a powerful cold front will drop temperatures to near freezing on Monday morning.
High temperatures will drop from 75 degrees on Sunday to 46 degrees on Monday. Low temperatures on Monday will be in the middle 30s for the Houston area.
What We Know: Arctic air will filter into the region next week and on Tuesday morning have us right around freezing in Houston and likely in the 20s to the north.
The wind chill will make it feel even colder than the temperatures.

We will likely see multiple nights below freezing.
What We Don't Know: We don't know exactly how cold we expect temperatures to fall next week and when the coldest Arctic air will move in and leave.
Another big question is if we will see sleet or snow. There is a chance for light precipitation late Thursday into Friday. Most of this will likely fall as rain, but there's still a very low chance that there could be a light wintry mix. Right now the timing does not appear favorable for any major snow or ice for the Houston area.
Models have differed on what we expect late next week, so that could change.
