Houston weather: Freeze warning, cold weather advisory Monday

Monday will be sunny, windy and cold with highs in the 40s and wind chills in the 20s and 30s.

What a crazy drop in temperatures! Houston went from a high of 80 at Hobby on Sunday to below freezing Monday morning. Most of the area experienced the coldest morning since Jan. 17, 2024.

Prepare for more freezing temperatures Monday night. That means protecting the "four Ps" – plants, pets, people and pipes. Make sure people you know have heat, give pets a warm, safe place to sleep, cover sensitive plants and check the wrap on your pipes.

Houston freeze: Warnings & advisories

  • A freeze warning was in effect until 9 a.m. Monday. A freeze warning is issued when temperatures are expected to dip below freezing for a long period of time.
  • A cold weather advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Monday. A cold weather advisory is issued for seasonably cold, but not extremely cold, air temperatures or wind chill values.

With blustery winds, feels-like temperatures were in the teens and 20s waking up Monday morning.

Make sure you dress in layers, bring your pets inside and limit your time outdoors during the early morning hours this upcoming week.

Take steps to protect sensitive outdoor plants and plumbing.

Will it snow in Houston?

The question on everyone's mind: Will we get any snow? There is a chance, but it's not looking likely right now.

Expect a nasty Thursday with cold rain that might have some sleet pellets mixed in.

Snow is much more likely in North Texas.

One of the concerns to watch out for is the chance for ice on Thursday night and Friday morning, so we'll have updates as we get closer.

ERCOT Weather Watch

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a Weather Watch from Jan. 6 to Jan. 10 due to anticipated cold weather across the Southeast Texas region, an expected increase in electricity demand, and the possibility of lower energy reserves.

No immediate action is required from Texans. However, ERCOT recommends monitoring grid conditions and being mindful of energy usage, especially during peak demand hours.
