High school students lead desegregation efforts
At age 16, Kelton Sams lead other students from the all Black high school in Galveston to sit in and protest segregated lunch counters, restaurants, theaters and beaches. The Central High students’ actions caught the attention of city leaders, and Galveston became the first southern city to desegregate from protests. Several of the former students met with FOX 26 at Star Drug Store, one of the original businesses involved back in 1960.
