Houston weather: Hot, hazy weather ahead

Houston will be hot, hazy, and humid over the next couple of days. The Saharan Dust moved into Southeast Texas yesterday and should impact the area through Thursday. High pressure continues to take hold over Texas and should keep rain out of the forecast until this weekend.

Why are earthquakes shaking Texas? Professor explains

Last Friday an earthquake centered west of Abilene was measured at magnitude 5.1 and was felt as far away as downtown Dallas. Earthquakes of that magnitude are very rare in the Lone Star State, but smaller magnitude 3’s and 4’s have become common over the last 15 years in North Texas. Mike Iscovitz asked Dr. Brian Stump, seismologist and geoscientist from Southern Methodist University, what was causing all the shaking and if it’s anything for us to worry about.

Fox 26 Houston Weather Forecast

Hazy, hot & humid weather will remain in place this week as high pressure takes hold and a plume of Saharan dust moves in. We should notice a browning tinge to the sky by this afternoon and it will be more noticeable Wednesday. Mornings will be warm and humid with afternoons running at or slightly above average for the rest of the week. In the tropics, there is a broad area of low pressure in the Atlantic Ocean that is moving in the general direction of Puerto Rico and will get closer to Florida late this week as a slowly developing system. From there, it's just too early to tell. Models are not lining up well on strengthening or location, so anywhere from the Gulf Coast to the Carolinas will keep an eye on this tropical wave this week.

FOX 26 Houston Weather Forecast: Heat building back in

This week will look much different than last week. Rain chances are low and temperatures will be warmer. Afternoon highs will start in the mid 90s but climb to the upper 90s for the end of the week. If you see any rain, it will come from an isolated pop up afternoon storm. Look for haze in the sky starting on Tuesday as a round of Saharan dusts moves into southeast Texas. This will probably be the thickest plume Houston has seen so far this summer.

Tropical Update: Tropical Depression to form this week?

The National Hurricane Center continues to watch a poorly defined tropical disturbance in the central Atlantic. There is a chance it becomes a tropical depression later in the week but lots of different ideas of where it would go.

Fox 26 Houston Weather Forecast

Rain chances are down and humidity is way, way up! It's going to be a sweltering week with highs in the mid 90s, but heat index values of at least 105 and probably higher at times. As far as rain, there is a chance for a couple of storms this afternoon with lower chances by mid-week. We should notice a haze in the sky tomorrow and Wednesday with a plume of Saharan dust moving in, and it's probably the thickest of the summer so far. Otherwise, with low pressure moving out and high pressure taking hold this week, expect a super steamy week. In the tropics, there is a poorly defined tropical disturbance in the central Atlantic that has a chance of becoming a tropical depression later this week. It is very far from Texas and, so far, doesn't look like a big deal. It's a reminder that tropical activity is going to pick up big time over the next few weeks.

Tropical Update: Possible tropical depression

Disturbed weather over the central tropical Atlantic is expected to join with a tropical wave and could form into a tropical depression this week. Environmental conditions will encourage development over the northern Leeward Islands, Greater Antilles, or southwestern Atlantic Ocean.

Fox 26 Houston Weather Forecast

Southeast Texas is waking up to another round of rain and storms. Isolated flooding is possible in poor drainage areas. A big change in our weather pattern begins on Monday. Much drier air arrives bringing an increase in temperatures. Highs will be back to the mid-90s next week. An area of disturbed weather in the Atlantic now has a medium chance for development next week. Stay up-to-date in the tropics by watching our daily tropical update on FOX Local.

Tropical update: Disturbed weather in Atlantic

An area of disturbed weather over the central tropical Atlantic Ocean is being monitored by the National Hurricane Center. Chances are still low for tropical development but it is the first sign of the Atlantic Basin starting to become more active for August.
