Tropical Weather Forecast - June 23, 2024

TROPICS- INVEST 93L is holding running out of time but it is not done yet. La Nina years have historically seen more activity than El Nino years, let's look at the numbers.

Tropical Update: Possible development in Gulf

Those worried about a Tropical Disturbance near the Southeast US are here for the good news- INVEST 92L is done. All attention returns to the Gulf of Mexico as INVEST 93L is still trying to become a tropical depression before landfall.

Tropical Update: Chance for tropical wave in Gulf

Tropical Storm Alberto is long gone but two additional areas are being monitored for Tropical development. There's a 50-60% chance that a low in the SW Atlantic could develop into a tropical depression before it reaches the coast tonight. A broad low is also expected to form in the SW Gulf of Mexico this weekend and track northwest into Mexico next week. Impacts for Southeast Texas should be minimal this time. But slightly higher tides, spotty downpours, and a high rip currents risk will likely stick around next week.

Tropical Update: Tropical Storm Alberto made landfall

Tropical Storm Alberto made landfall near Tampico, Mexico early this morning. As of this afternoon, the last Advisory has been issued for Alberto since it has fallen apart and weakened over Mexico. Coastal Flood Warnings end this evening but watch out for roads that may still be flooded from storm surge. It's still breezy with gusts near 30 mph but the Wind Advisory has come to an end. Rip current risk remains high at area beaches. There are two additional areas of possible tropical development. One has a 40% chance to turn into a tropical system in the SW Atlantic over the next few days. The other has a MEDIUM 50% chance to become a Tropical depression or storm in the SW Gulf over the next 7 days.

Tropical Update: Tropical Storm Alberto in the Gulf

Tropical Storm Alberto formed in the SW Gulf of Mexico this morning around 10 AM and should make landfall in eastern Mexico overnight. Alberto will bring waves of heavy rain to SE Texas through this evening along with gusty winds and coastal flooding. Some roads along the coast are impassable due to storm surge flooding. Wind should gradually subside and heaviest rain will push west Thursday as Alberto moves farther away and weakens over land. Tropical Update: Potential storm develops in Gulf

Potential Tropical Cyclone One is still churning in the SW Gulf of Mexico with 40 mph winds moving north at 6 mph. It is still expected to turn into Tropical Storm Alberto over the next 24 hours making landfall in NE Mexico Wednesday night into early Thursday. Heavy rain threat has shifted a bit farther SW but coastal flooding, rip current risk and gusts to 40 mph are all possible for coastal communities. Flood Watch remains in place for most areas near and south of I-10.

FOX 26 Houston Weather Forecast: Huge amounts of rain on the way

Flood Watch has been issued for Houston and areas near and south of I-10 from 7 pm Tuesday through 1am Thursday. Some locations in the flood watch could pick up 5 to 10" of rain during this time with isolated higher totals. That means you need to watch out for areas that could quickly flood and turn around, don't drown! Trinity River near Liberty is expected to go from moderate to major flood stage later this week so watch for the flood threat increasing here also. Big plume of tropical moisture will surge north of Potential Tropical Cyclone 1 in the SW Gulf of Mexico. This system should slam into Eastern Mexico over the next few days but will bring us several rounds of heavy rain. Heaviest rain is expected Tuesday PM - Wednesday PM and both are FOX 26 Storm Alert Days. Beach conditions will also be rough where there's a coastal flood watch & higher risk for rip currents. Lower rain chances will linger through the weekend and early next week.

Tropical Update: Potential systems being monitored

During this second week of hurricane season, tropics are heating up with 3 potential systems the national hurricane center is monitoring. One is off the southeast US coast with a low chance for development. The second is in the southern Gulf of Mexico with now a MEDIUM 40% chance to develop into a tropical system. The third is in the eastern Pacific with just a low shot to become a tropical depression or storm. The disturbance in the Gulf will likely stay south of Houston but will bring tropical moisture and higher rain chances next week.

Tropical Update: Areas of concern being monitored

The tropics are heating up with 3 areas of concern that the National Hurricane Center will be monitoring. There's an area around Florida, the Southwest Gulf of Mexico & in the eastern Pacific that's being monitored for tropical cyclone development. In Southeast Texas, our main focus will be the possible development of a broad area of low pressure in the SW Gulf of Mexico. Right now, there's a 30% chance that a tropical system could develop in the Bay of Campeche in the southern Gulf of Mexico over the next 7 days. If it develops, this system should stay to our south but will spread a plume of tropical moisture our way early next week. This will mean the risk for tropical downpours that could increase our flood threat. Models are showing the possibility of 2-4" of rain through Tuesday for parts of the area. Keep checking back for more updates!

Tropical Update: First tropical wave in the Gulf

The first tropical wave of the season has formed in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, Invest 90-L. Tropical moisture from this new disturbance in the eastern Gulf of Mexico will bring a big flood threat to South Florida in the next few days. This disturbance will not impact SE Texas. But another big plume of tropical moisture is forecast to surge into the Gulf early next week. There's a chance a weak Gulf low could develop. But whether we get a tropical system or not, our rain chances will likely be going up early next week. So plan on more rain that could be heavy at times on Monday and Tuesday. Keep checking back as we get more model updates.
