How Black History Month came to be

Every February, Americans across the country celebrate and honor Black excellence in our communities but how much do you know about the month's origin? The News Edge Early Edition speaks with Dr. Vida Robertson, the Director of Critical Race Studies at The University of Houston Downtown about the birth of Black History Month that began as a week and later evolved, as well as how people can take part in celebrating the history of Black America.

Online petition pushing for Texas teen's release after beating stepfather to death for alleged child abuse

Nearly 250,000 people have signed a petition asking Governor Greg Abbott to release three teenagers accused of beating their stepfather to death after finding out he was sexually abusing their 9-year-old sister. Two of the boys are brothers. The other is a family friend. All of them are being held on million-dollar bonds and if convicted face life in prison without the possibility of parole. News Edge Legal Analyst Charles Adams has offered to represent the boys for free if they need legal council.

How illegal gun modification played factor in Houston police shootout

The gun used in Thursday’s shootout with police appears to have been illegally modified to operate as an automatic weapon: a machine gun. The Houston office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) demonstrates how machine guns work and are highly illegal.
