Battle over police reform underway in Austin

At the state capitol in Austin, critical hearings have begun on a slate of police reforms bearing George Floyd's name - increased training, testimony corroboration, mandatory by-standing officer intervention on excessive force and most controversially, elimination of "qualified immunity", which shields officers from civil lawsuits.

Hearings are being held in the Texas state capital on a sweeping police reform bill named after Houstonian George Floyd. The Floyd family offered passionate testimony as members of law enforcement fought to protect qualified immunity.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill ruled Friday he will not delay Derek Chauvin’s trial or move it out of Hennepin County. Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, is charged in the death of George Floyd. 

Derek Chauvin trial: Seated jurors back up to 9 after Wednesday

Two new jurors were seated in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd, Wednesday, bringing the total number of jurors seated in the trial back up to nine. Prosecutors and defense attorneys will continue to question potential jurors until they can seat a 12-person jury, with two alternates.

Two previously seated jurors were dismissed Wednesday from serving on the jury in the Derek Chauvin trial after they told the judge they could not remain impartial after learning of the $27 million civil settlement for the family of George Floyd. Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, is charged in Floyd’s death. 

3rd-degree murder reinstated in Derek Chauvin trial

Following arguments Thursday morning, Judge Peter Cahill ruled the third-degree murder charge will be reinstated in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd.
