HOUSTON - Darrell Asberry told FOX 26 Sports he has stepped down as the head football coach at Texas Southern University
“I’ve resigned from Texas Southern University to pursue other options,” Asberry said.
“I appreciate Texas Southern and (TSU vice president for intercollegiate athletics) Dr. Charles McClelland for all that they’ve done for me and my family and the support they’ve given me.
“It gives me an opportunity to spend more time with my family, especially my son.”
In four seasons with the Tigers Asberry had an overall record of 12-31.
He won only nine games in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, finishing with a 9-27 record in the SWAC.
Asberry’s best season at TSU came in 2014 when he was 5-7 overall, and 3-6 in conference play.
Before joining Texas Southern, Asberry was the head coach at Shaw University for six years.
“I support Coach Asberry’s decision,” said Dr. McClelland. “Not only was he a great football coach, but he’s a great friend. I wish him well, and I fully support him in his future endeavors.
“We will immediately begin a national search for Coach Asberry’s replacement.”
