BAYTOWN, Texas (FOX 26) - A woman was shot by an officer in Baytown and then managed to lead police on a 25-mile chase to Liberty County.
It started around 11 a.m. Wednesday when a Baytown police officer pulled over a pick-up truck for a traffic stop. There was a woman driving and a man in the passenger seat. The officer soon took the man out of the truck and called for back up, telling dispatch the woman wasn't cooperating.
Shortly after the second officer arrived, according to investigators, the woman put the pick up in reverse and took off, nearly running over her passenger and both officers. Authorities say that's when the officer who initially made the stop opened fire because he feared for his life.
The woman was shot at least once but led the second officer on a chase up to Liberty County just off of FM 1409, where cops found her hiding in a trailer home. So, why did she run?
“At this point we don’t know. Until we get a chance to talk with her maybe tomorrow or the next day we just don’t know why she ran. I don’t know that she had any outstanding warrants or anything at this point or if there was anything illegal in the truck. I just don’t know,” explains Baytown Police Department Lt. Steve Dorris.
The woman was flown by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital and rushed into surgery. The officer who shot the woman is an 18-year veteran of the Baytown Police Department. He’s now on a three-day paid leave, which is standard after an officer is involved in a shooting.
The woman is expected to be charged with felony evading arrest.
