HOUSTON (FOX 26) - UPDATE: Cassandra Damper was charged on Wednesday with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She is expected to turn herself.
The tragic video of a man being shot on Facebook Live has been seen and shared all over the world. The woman who shot him was in court this morning. Cassandra Damper has a curfew and she’ll have to wear a monitor as she’s out on bond after she shot a man live on social media while she was playing with a gun.
"I feel real bad about it because I know she’s a good person,” says Chas Martin, who ironically knows the accused and saved the victim’s life.
All most people know about Damper is the video making its way around social media. Investigators say the 25-year-old woman was playing with guns early Easter morning, streaming it live on Facebook and subsequently shot Devyn Holmes in the head as they sat in a car outside a gas station on Almeda.
"I really thought it was an April fool’s joke because he’s a joker,” explains Holmes’ mother Sheree Holmes.
"It’s one of the most tragic things I’ve ever seen. The level of recklessness used in this case is really obscene. The guy who’s actually injured in this case says right before you shoot him you’re making me nervous. The level of recklessness used in this case is really obscene,” says Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Phanco.
So far, Damper has only been charged with tampering with evidence because police say she tried to wipe the gunshot residue from her hands and she initially reported to officers that Holmes shot himself. The 25-year-old woman is out of jail on a $2,500 bond.
"$2,500 bond. People get more for smoking weed. My son is fighting for his life and she’s walking around free,” says Mrs. Holmes.
“People are painting her to be a monster. I know she’s a good person. That isn’t to take away from the extremeness of the event. I’m praying for everyone involved,” says Martin, who is a Houston firefighter and a four-year veteran of the department. Martin was off duty and happened to be heading home from a party around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when he came upon the shooting. “Put him on the ground, checked for a pulse again. He still didn’t have a pulse, started doing chest compressions,” Martin explains.
"I was confused. I was telling God ‘I don’t know why I’m here right now but I’m just going to keep going,’” says Martin. The young firefighter continued CPR until the lifeless man on the ground actually started breathing again.
“Under my hands I felt his chest rise and it was a weird feeling. I’m trying to hold my tears in right now but it’s very difficult,” Martin admits.
The prosecutor says he will request a higher bond and almost certainly file more charges against Damper likely this week. "What we want to do is make sure we finish the investigation, have all of our facts, file all of the appropriate charges and then ask for the bond at that time,” says Phanco.
Holmes’ mom says he's in the hospital in an induced coma on a ventilator.
As for Martin, he says this has changed his life and he’s looking forward to meeting Devyn Holmes when, not if, he’s released from the hospital.
“I’m having people contact me from all over telling me I’m a hero. I just chose duty over courage. I had a person contact me from India, all types of people all walks of life just giving me praise but I just keep giving it to God and telling them it wasn’t me. I was just a vessel".
