HOUSTON (FOX 16) - Too often the elderly put off writing a will because they're confused about the process and can't afford an attorney.
Houston has a great resource for helping low income seniors with a will. The Houston Bar Association Elder Law Committee is gearing up for a Will-a-thon..and it's free!
You just need to qualify.
Joy Eckelkamp is with the Houston Bar Association Elder Law Committee. She warns seniors that without a will, the people they love risk losing a lot.
"If you die without a will the state decides who gets your estate when you pass on....And that may not be the people you would like it to go to,"she said.
To help, the Houston Bar Association is hosting a Will-A-Thon in April. It's designed for handicapped, veterans and low-income seniors.
To qualify you need to call 713-228-0735. If you qualify, you then meet with a volunteer attorney.
Participants can designate , power of attorney, medical power of attorney, and end of life directives. But the primary focus is on writing that will.
