Retail theft a major issue; check security seals on meds, food, beauty products
HOUSTON - Retail theft has been a major issue the last few years. From big smash and grabs by crime rings, to people simply stealing medications, foods, and other items right out of packaging in stores.
Pharmacists say it happens, and you need to take an extra look before you buy.

Thefts have been happening in retail stores as well as drug stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores.
Now some stores are going so far as to lock up food, medications, and beauty products in cabinets.
Law enforcement says over-the-counter medications are the most stolen. But sometimes it's not obvious like a smash and grab.
Pharmacists say thieves can also take pills and vitamins right out of the containers, close them, and put them back on shelves.
That's why pharmacists say it's always a good idea to check that security seals are still in place.
Law officers say thieves use online marketplaces like eBay or Amazon to sell stolen meds, such as Zyrtec, Claritin, or Prilosec, or beauty products from brands like Olay, Neutrogena, and Roc, often at much lower prices. That's your red flag.
And they say if you buy these types of items from third party sellers, be sure to check that seals are intact and that they're not past the expiration date.

The tough economy has led to people swiping food out of containers in grocery stores, too. The Food and Drug Administration says always make sure containers are still sealed, and don't use products that are discolored, moldy, or have an off odor.
If you find that packaging has been opened, let the manager know. If you discover after you get it home, you can bring it back to the store for a refund.
