What is a Blue Alert?
BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas - The Blue alert was created to help quickly capture violent criminals who kill or seriously wound local, state, or federal law enforcement officers. During Blue alerts, the public receives information about the suspect, and gives law enforcement tips and leads.
What are the criteria for a Blue Alert?
The below represents Blue Alert criteria for the state's network:
- A law enforcement officer must have been killed or seriously injured by an offender.
- The investigating law enforcement agency must determine that the offender poses a serious risk or threat to the public and other law enforcement personnel.
- A detailed description of the offender's vehicle, vehicle tag, or partial tag, if applicable.
- The investigating law enforcement agency of jurisdiction must recommend activation of the Blue Alert to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Blue Alert issued after Brazoria County Deputy Sheriff is killed
What we know:
Deputy Sheriff Jesus Jesse Vargas was shot and killed Wednesday just before noon as he was attempting to serve a warrant against a repeat violent offender for aggravated assault.
The suspect shot Deputy Vargas in the head as he approached to serve the warrant.
A Blue Alert was issued for 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis III, also known as Sean Christopher Davis, for the deadly shooting of Deputy Sheriff Vargas on Stella Link Road.
Robert Lee Davis III aka Sean Christopher Davis
Davis was last seen in a blue Nike hoodie with wire Nike lettering on the front, blue jeans, and blue sneakers.
He is described as having black hair and brown eyes, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing around 200 pounds.
He was wanted for aggravated assault and is considered a repeat violent offender.
What we don't know:
Davis has not been located as of 2:45 p.m.
Investigators have set up a perimeter to find Davis and place him in custody.
Deputy Sheriff Jesus Jesse Vargas
What we know:
Vargas was a 17-year veteran with the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office. He has a wife and three kids.
He was a member of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.
