Friends and family are mourning the death a 70-year-old Atlanta man who was shot and killed during a carjacking over the weekend. David Tuttle died Saturday. His family remembers him as a Renaissance man.
ATLANTA - FOX 5 Atlanta has learned more about a teenager wanted in Texas who police say shot and killed a 70-year-old man during a carjacking in Atlanta over the holiday weekend.
Jaylen Mosley, 19, reportedly had warrants out for his arrest in Harris County in Houston, Texas, when he allegedly shot and killed 70-year-old David B. Tuttle on Saturday night while trying to take his vehicle.
Medics rushed Tuttle to a local hospital where he later died.
19-year-old fugitive charged in Atlanta murder
FOX 5 Atlanta learned more about 19-year-old Jaylen Mosley who's charged with murdering a 70-year-old man and hijacking a motor vehicle. A fugitive warrant from Harris County, Texas, showed Mosley was wanted in Houston.
"I always saw people around here, but I never saw violence or nothing like that, so it was really a surprise to me. We got too many guns, and then we shooting people for no reason, really," Hermon Baaqar told FOX 5.
Baaqar said he’s been a customer of the Banks Package Store for years. He was stunned to hear someone so young would commit such a brazen crime.
"That’s a pitiful thought there. Our children always looking around to rob us, and we the elders," the 81 year-old said.
Police arrested Mosley shortly after the incident. FOX 5 has since learned the teen was a fugitive wanted out of Texas.
He has now been charged with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, armed robbery and high jacking a motor vehicle.
"They don’t understand the consequences that’s out there, and it’s too late to call mama when you in that little old room there. You ain’t got nothing but a bunk, a commode and a sink," Baaqar stated.
Mosley is in custody at the Fulton County Jail. He was scheduled to go before a judge on Monday morning but waived his appearance.
According to officials in Texas, Mosley was wanted for damaging a Texas woman's property, including her front door, resulting in thousands of dollars in repairs.
He waived his first court appearance in Georgia.
Accused carjacker waives first appearance
Jaylen Mosley, 19, who is accused of killing a 70-year-old man during a carjacking over the weekend waived his first appearance on Monday morning.
Tuttle's family shared a written statement with FOX 5 Atlanta on Monday:
"We are devastated that David was taken by the senseless violence so prevalent today in communities large and small. We are thankful for the Atlanta Police Department’s swift apprehension of the suspect and are working in cooperation with the authorities and the court to ensure there is justice for this crime."
Tuttle was a native Atlantan, raised in Ansley Park and a member of the South Atlanta community. His loved ones remember him as "...a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend. A renaissance man, artist, and master craftsman, he was a creative and kind soul with an amazing sense of humor who will be deeply missed."
