Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has been indicted on multiple felony charges. He can continue his work in office just as Governor Rick Perry did after his two felony indictments in August 2014.
We won’t know what Paxton was indicted for until Monday. This past week a grand jury heard evidence in regards to Paxton and securities fraud.
Just weeks ago special prosecutors assigned to the Texas AG’s case said they believed they had substantial evidence to secure a first degree felony fraud indictment from a grand jury. Securities fraud is a first degree felony in the state and prosecutors have said the amount of money involved in the case is much higher than $100,000.
The case traces back to when Paxton was running for office and was fined a $1,000 after he admitted to repeatedly soliciting clients for a friends investment firm without being properly registered.
Brian Wice one of the special prosecutors in Paxton’s case released this statement:
As defense attorneys, we have dedicated our careers to ensuring that every citizen accused of any crime is afforded the fundamental constitutional guarantees of the presumption of innocence,
proof beyond a reasonable doubt, and a fair trial with a reliable result. Because our statutory mandate as special prosecutors is not to convict, but to see that justice is done, our commitment to these bedrock principles remains inviolate.
A Tarrant County judge was appointed to hear the case which is predicted will go to trial. If convicted Paxton could face a sentence of 5 years to life in prison and a fine of no more than $10,000.
