Student stabbed at Sterling High School

A number of crime concerns at local schools were reported on Wednesday and a student was stabbed at Sterling High School. FOX 26's Damali Keith spoke with students who were at school when it happened.

A 16-year-old Houston ISD student was rushed from school to the hospital by ambulance after he was stabbed with a knife Wednesday morning at Sterling Aviation Early College High School in Southeast Houston on Martindale Road.

The HISD Police Chief says two boys got into a fight around 10 a.m. at Sterling High, and said a 17-year-old student pulled out a knife and stabbed his 16-year-old schoolmate.

"My understanding is the wound is not life-threatening. I believe two stab wounds to the left side of the body. This was an isolated incident. It's very unfortunate anytime something like this happens," says HISD Chief of Police Shamara Garner.

"The school was placed on lockdown shortly after the incident right around when it happened, and was lifted about noon," explains HISD Deputy Chief of Communications Richard Guerra.

"I was really scared. I started praying. I was hoping that everything would be OK. There have been many fights this week, last week, the week before. There have been many fights at this school. I'm concerned because a lot of people can get seriously hurt," says student Luis Ramos.

FOX 26 Houston is now on the FOX LOCAL app available through Apple TV, Amazon FireTV, Roku, Google Android TV, and Vizio!

"The officer assigned to the building was already in the building, was immediately notified of the altercation, went upstairs, and was able to immediately apprehend the 17-year-old suspect who is in custody," the Chief explained.

As for the student's condition who was stabbed?

"I can tell you they were alert and conscious, talking to EMS before being transported," says Guerra.

When the lockdown lifted around noon, there was a long line of parents picking up their kids. We saw moms and dads hugging and holding their children once they finally made it to them.

Some of the kids are saying the fight was over something as silly as a Vape pen.
