Star of Hope helps to keep homeless community warm
HOUSTON - As the cold weather sets in for the week, the Star of Hope is making sure the homeless community stays warm. The non-profit organization helps the unhoused community by providing them with shelter and resources for recovery.
"I don’t have a job right now, so I can’t afford these things," said one homeless woman near downtown.

Huddled beneath the freeway sits some of Houston’s most vulnerable population. The homeless community is struggling to keep warm in the frigid weather.
"Well, it was really cold last night. I thought I was going to freeze to death. I had to put a lot of blankets on and bundle up," said the homeless woman.

A van with the words ‘Star of Hope’ arrived downtown, to bring much-needed resources to those in need.
"What we’re trying to do is reach out to the street homeless who can’t get into a shelter and let them know that we are there for them," said Scott Arthur, the Director of Public Relations for the Star of Hope.
Volunteers piled blankets, coats, and outerwear to a long line of those facing hardship. The Star of Hope said their women and children’s center is at capacity, and their men’s shelter is almost to capacity. But that’s not stopping them from helping the homeless stay warm this winter.
"We have approximately 100 blankets, 100 jackets, and that’s going to go really, really fast," said a volunteer.
The Star of Hope also said they’re in need of donations of socks, jackets, gloves, and more. Donations can be brought to their Donation and Distribution Center at 2320 Lamar Street, and to the Star of Hope's Cornerstone Community location at 2575 Reed Road at Highway 288. Drop off hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
