What's next
Abreu has been charged with aggravated assault of a family member and burglary with intent to commit another felony. His court hearings will be held in the 486th District Court. He is expected to be in court on Jan. 7.
The backstory
In 2015, Abreu was convicted of prostitution with three or more priors in Harris County.
In 2021, Abreu tried to purchase a gun from an Academy Sports and Outdoors. Being a convicted felon, it is illegal for him to be in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, Abreu provided his driver's license when trying to purchase the gun. When the clerk explained the gun came with a six-round magazine and an eight-round magazine, Abreu told the clerk, "Man, that's fine, I got eight rounds to kill eight people today."
The clerk told Abreu that he was not able to sell him the gun because of his comments.
Court documents show Abreu was upset, but then said he understood and they were just doing their jobs.
Police were notified and Abreu's information was provided.
Because he is a convicted felon. Abreu would not have been able to purchase the firearm. After his information was entered into the system, it would have been flagged.
He took a plea deal and was sentenced to four years in the Texas Department of Corrections for attempted possession of a firearm by a felon.
