Several inches of rain on Tuesday cause street flooding, close schools

Car were left abandoned across roadways and several school districts cancelled classes after several inches of rain fell around the Houston area on Tuesday evening. More rain is in the forecast this week.

Rainfall totals in the 18-hour period from 7 a.m. May to 1 a.m. May 8 ranged from as much as 10” near Kingwood to more than 12” southwest of Sugar Land to under 1” in northwest Harris County, according to the National Weather Service.

Last night in Sugar Land, officials said all major roadways were impassable after seven inches of rain fell during a four-hour period. Our crews reported hundreds of cars abandoned last night near New Territory Boulevard at Grand Parkway southwest of Sugar Land because of high water. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and DPS spent the night clearing roadways of abandoned cars.

The Fort Bend County judge issued a disaster declaration for his county. County Judge KP George said the disaster declaration will allow the county to take extraordinary measures to help and protect residents and their property. He said people need to understand this weather is a serious threat, and the Brazos River levels will likely worsen as the week continues.

In Kingwood, heavy rain downed trees and caused serious street flooding – leaving some roads impassable. Some cars were left stranded. Police say many of the vehicles have been moved. Drivers who are looking for their vehicles are asked to call the tow line. Check for your vehicle here.

Several school districts have cancelled classes for Wednesday including Huffman ISD, Splendora ISD, New Caney ISD and Cleveland ISD.

Scattered heavy storms are possible again on Wednesday afternoon and through the end of the week.
