Fire burns several cars, building in Houston

A fire sent up a massive plume of smoke on Thursday morning as several cars and part of a building burned on Houston's south side.

An investigation into how the fire started is being conducted, but the fire department says it appears it began as someone was tearing down some cars. As part of that process, they drained the oil and gas from the cars, and it somehow it ignited, officials say. The fire reportedly spread to small gas tanks, batteries, tires and other car parts, sending up the dark column of smoke.

The fire department says hazardous materials crews were monitoring the air, and no concerns have been detected. There is no shelter-in-place.
