HOUSTON (FOX 26) - The Houston Astros trip to the World Series means more police paying a visit to Minute Maid Park. There are quite a few security concerns that come with such a high-profile set of games. The Houston Police Department is hatching a big plan to keep the city safe during each of the big games.
Houston-area residents are certainly hot with Astros fever.
"Heck, this is great," says Astros fan Gus Tristan with a smile. "I get to see another World Series in Houston."
"I went to the New York games in New York and I went to the games here," explains Chris Riggs. "So I'm trying to support the team the best I can."
During the World Series as the Astros attempt to dominate the Dodgers, Houston police are making plans so the only excitement at Minute Maid Park will be on the field.
"We've learned a lot since 2005 (since the last time the Astros played in the World Series)," says Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Matt Slinkard. "Some of the major challenges associated with hosting a World Series involve activities ancillary to the game, outside of the game."
HPD and supporting agencies will be out in force.
"We will have plenty of resources on hand and we will have resources, both seen and unseen, to protect the public," adds Asst. Chief Slinkard.
Are Houston-area residents concerned about safety during the World Series?
"Oh no, I think Houston's a very safe city," says Matthew Taylor.
"Anything can happen and it's a risk that we take," adds Riggs. "It's America. It's 2017 and that's how things are panning out nowadays."
"Keeping your eyes and your ears open is the important thing and not just leaving it up to the authorities," says Julie McDowell.
Assistant Chief Slinkard says HPD will use social media to relay messages and he adds that hopefully the department will use you as well, as extra eyes and ears. He's encouraging you, if you see something suspicious, say something immediately.
