Remembering Astroworld: 10 years later
HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Six Flags Astroworld was a seasonally-operated theme park, and now permanent memory in the Houston area for the last 10 years.
It sat between Kirby Drive and Fannin Avenue, directly south of Loop 610, and originally opened on June 1, 1968.
Astroworld was permanently closed by the Six Flags Corporation after its final day of operations on October 30, 2005. It was demolished between October 30, 2005 and the first half of the year in 2006. The bridge crossing Loop 610 from the park to the parking lot continues to stand and is the last remaining structure from AstroWorld. The grassland that now serves as a reminder of where the park once stood, now acts as overflow parking during the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Some fans just can't stop reliving the park's rides. In the archived video above, reporter Ned Hibberd was live at the site of the theme park with one man's story.
