Port of Galveston Police have identified a man whose body was recovered from a submerged vehicle in Galveson Harbor early Friday morning.

Cameron Sharman, 32, of La Marque, was recovered from the cab of a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup.

Port security video shows the truck driving from Pier 20 into the water at 2:14 a.m., according to police. Pier 20 is a working pier located in a commercial area of the port that is open to the public.

Around 11:30 a.m., police were alerted to the possibility of a submerged vehicle after reports of a broken wooden railing on the pier.

Police launched an investigation and saw security video showing the pickup driving into the water.

A port police patrol boat was called to the scene before noon and used sonar to find the vehicle that was 29-feet down.

At the time, it was not known if anyone was in the cab until the truck was brought to the surface, due to poor visibility in the water.

The pickup was removed from the water just after 7 p.m. Friday. Police believe Sherman was the only person in the truck when it went into the water.

Authorities are investigating the cause of death and details surrounding the incident. Anyone who may have details is asked to call the Port of Galveston Police Department at (409) 766-6169.
