"America's Amputee" journeys to the Gulf
Herren says for about three months he prepared for his trip, spending time and money making sure he had all the necessary items, but also making sure his horses were trained for the trip.
Along the journey from Oklahoma to Bolivar Peninsula, Herren says he has connected with many people who have given him money, food and shelter for him, and the horses.
The backstory:
At 2-years-old, Herren was electrocuted by a transformer after climbing though a gap in a fence.
"8,333 volts of electricity went out the back of my head and out of my arms," Herren said. "Things appeared to be fine until doctors gave me new news that I would likely be a vegetable the rest of my life."
Losing his arms, Herren said he struggled as a child turned teenager. Although his mother never gave up on him, he felt ready to commit suicide around the age of 14.
"My heart became very dark, and I would describe myself as a walking sphere of hatred. When I was 14 or 15-years-old, it went to the point where I couldn't stand living the rest of my life.
Herren says he found God as a teenager.
An important conversation with God led Herren to change his life
"So I thought to myself, what if I was wrong and there was a God who loves me," Herren said "So two weeks had long gone past, and I continued to talk to God, and I went from a sphere of murderous hatred to a fear of love."
Herren says that after finding God, he felt the need to change his life, so he started picking up hobbies, such as competing nationally for Taekwondo and raising horses.
Herren said that he felt inspired to go on this trip after his connection with God. He says that he also met a family of six on a similar journey, so he thought, why not try it.
What's next:
Herren has made it to the Gulf of Mexico thanks to support from loved ones and strangers. He plans to head for Canada with his two horses.
