NORAD Santa Tracker 2024
On most nights, North American Aerospace Defense Command scans the skies for potential threats.
On Christmas Eve, volunteers in Colorado Springs answer calls from at least 100,000 kids about Santa's location.
NORAD's tracking of Santa started with an accidental phone call from a child in 1955.
A Colorado Springs newspaper printed a Sears ad encouraging children to call Santa, listing an incorrect phone number. A boy called, but instead reached an emergency-only phone within NORAD.
Air Force Col. Harry W. Shoup responded, and a tradition was born.
Some have questioned the story, but the annual tradition lives on.
NORAD will track Santa until 1 a.m. Central Time.
