NEW WAVERLY, Texas - New Waverly ISD says the fire department and EMS responded to New Waverly Intermediate after some students reported feeling ill on Thursday morning.
According to New Waverly ISD, students in first-period P.E. class began to smell a strong odor and started to feel ill.
Fire department and EMS officials arrived and performed CO and CO2 tests in the gym area with multi-gas detectors that would also pick up other gasses, the district says. All tests were negative.
Less than 10 students' parents chose to have their kids taken to a medical facility to be checked out, said Superintendent Darol Hail.
School officials report there is a theory because of the sudden nature and the non-existence of any lingering problems, the cause of the odor might have been man-made.
New Waverly ISD said,
Additionally, we contacted resources to do further testing from Montgomery County that used a GC/MS air sampling machine. All tests were negative both in the gym and throughout the campus as well. Finally, we also conducted a test with professionals to examine for gas leaks and none were detected.
We will continue to research and examine for causes. There is a theory that due to the sudden nature and the nonexistence of any lingering problems that there might be a man-made cause but at this point we do not have evidence of that.
The district says they are working to locate and correct the problem before the gym is used. Parents were called, and any parent who wanted to pick up their child may do so.
