Media treatment of tragic events
HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Two weeks have passed since the deadly shooting at Santa Fe High School and the southeast Texas town has been inundated with members of the news media tell their stories.
Reporters knock on doors of the victims and their families and track them down using social media. Some members of the affected community are willing to talk while others will slam the door on news crews. At one point, the FBI sent an alert to members of the news media to give the affected families a break. Elected leaders have been paying their respects to the affected community but also making public appearances in Santa Fe.
One attorney shared the following description in a newsletter:
After this shooting, politicians flocked to Galveston County to be seen on television lamenting the tragedy. I was particularly bothered by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez who appeared uninvited. The Galveston County officials actually in charge at the scene were waiting to gather more information and for the Governor to arrive.
