Man barricaded inside apartment with 2-year-old taken into custody: HPD

A standoff in southwest Houston ends with the suspect being taken into custody.

The incident began around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at a bar on Richmond. The suspect confronted the complainant, assaulting her in the parking lot in his vehicle. A witness called the police and the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle. The witness and complainant came to their apartment in the 7700 block of Corporate.

While they were inside, they received a call from the suspect telling them he was coming over to kill her. They locked the door, and a few minutes later he arrived and kicked it down. He ran inside and grabbed some knives from the kitchen. He took the complainant to the back bedroom where a 2-year-old girl was asleep.

The witness ran out and called the police. When officers arrived they spoke with her. They were making their way to the apartment when the female complainant came running out with her hands up, saying the little girl was still inside with the man.

Officers tried to talk him out, but didn't get a response from him. Then SWAT was called, who could see some movement in the bedroom. It appeared to be the child moving around to room. There was no response from the man. Authorities were able to place a camera through a window and see the little girl near the suspect, but couldn't tell what he was doing at the time.

The decision was made to launch a rescue at that time. SWAT officers entered the bedroom and were able to grab the little girl before the suspect was able to take any action.

He was taken into custody. There were several large knives near him and the little girl was completely unharmed.
