AG Ken Paxton suing New York doctor for sending abortion-inducing drugs to Texas woman

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter, a New York-based physician, accusing her of illegally providing abortion-inducing drugs to Texas residents in violation of state law.

The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Carpenter, who founded the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, prescribed the medication to a 20-year-old Collin County resident without holding a valid Texas medical license.

According to the petition, the woman was sent a box of mifepristone, 200 mg, and a pill bottle of misoprostol 200 mcg, to take four tablets, a total of 800 mcg, after the mifeprisone. Mifepristone stops the production of progesterone levels in the body, which is needed for pregnancy. Misoprostol is used within 24-48 hours afterwards mifepristone and is used in medication abortion and causes cervical softening and dilation and uterine contractions.

The 20-year-old asked the father of the unborn child, who had not known she was pregnant, to take her to the hospital because she was experiencing severe bleeding. Healthcare professionals told the father the woman "had been" pregnant.

AG Paxton's lawsuit claims Dr. Carpenter's violates Texas Health and Safety Code and her providing the drugs to the Texas woman caused abortion complications and a medical abortion.

The attorney genera's office claims Dr. Carpenter knowingly ignored these regulations by prescribing medication to Texas patients without proper authorization.

Attorney General Paxton is seeking a court order to stop Dr. Carpenter from continuing these practices and has requested civil penalties of at least $100,000 for each violation of state law.
