I-45 North Freeway crash: 1 dead after car fire, 4-year-old taken to hospital: HCSO

Harris County authorities are on the scene of a deadly, major accident in north Houston.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, units responded to the 14500 block of North Freeway northbound main lanes between Rankin and Airtex for a major accident.

HCSO Lieutenant Benoit reports a male driver in his 50s was going northbound on I-45 with his 4-year-old grandson in the backseat when he collided with the back of a Ford in the roadway.

According to witnesses, the driver of the Ford appeared to be stopped in a moving lane of traffic with car problems.

The crash resulted in a major accident and caused the Ford to catch fire.

Lt. Benoit says the driver was pronounced dead on scene when officials arrived.

The man and his 4-year-old grandchild were taken to Memorial Hermann in stable condition.

There were no signs of intoxication and no charges are pending at this time, Benoit reports.
