Governor Greg Abbott has announced the Texas Department of Emergency Management to activate state emergency response resources ahead of severe weather expected to impact the state this week.

The weather has already turned deadly as authorities attributed the bitter cold to one man's death Monday morning.

The Texas Department of Transportation says they don't expect roads to be too dangerous, but they are treating overpasses and high-traffic areas anyway.

"We've had crews going out to brine hot spot areas. Even though we're not anticipating precipitation, we're still taking the necessary precautions," said a TXDOT spokesperson.

Drake Rollins, a plumber and technician with David Hicks Plumbing, says bursting pipes could be an issue.

"We have really cold winds coming from the north - the wind really does freeze the piping on the outside walls, so I suggest insulating them," he said.

CenterPoint says they have been preparing for the winter months and are ready to respond to any outages the freeze could cause.

"We've maintained freeze protection equipment, and we've conducted emergency training for our op personnel and contractors," their spokesperson said.

They say they encourage customers to view their 2025 winter energy guide for usage and safety tips.

Though the city of Houston itself has not opened any warming centers - they have partnered with organizations like Star of Hope to keep the homeless population safe and warm during this event.
