According to police, the son, in his 30s, has been known to be violent and has reportedly attacked the father before.
On Tuesday night, the father, in his 70s, was watching TV on the sofa at their home and said that his son was drinking and becoming more belligerent, police say.
The son told the father things like he was going to put him under, which the father believed meant that the son was going to try to kill him, police say.

At some point, the son allegedly broke a mirror, started going after the dog and then started coming at the father.
Police say the father fired a warning shot, but the son kept coming at him, so the father shot him one time in the leg.
The son was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Police say there were witnesses who corroborated the father’s story.
