HOUSTON - The Houston Police Department is investigating after two people were injured when an elderly man suffered a medical emergency and crashed into a business.
Elderly man suffers medical emergency, strikes 2 people, crashes into business
What we know:
Officials said they were called out to the 6200 block of Westheimer just after 5 p.m. a vehicle had lost control and driven into a tattoo shop.
Authorities said when they arrived, they found an approximately 21-year-old male that was stuck under the vehicle "for a little bit" after crashing into the business.
Houston police said there were some officers working an extra job in the area, ran down, and put a tourniquet on the man who was trapped underneath the vehicle.
The man was later removed from under the vehicle after the Houston Fire Department arrived on the scene.
He was taken to the hospital and is said to be in serious condition.
Police said a preliminary investigation revealed an elderly male was leaving a convenience store on the other side of the street along Westheimer.
Authorities said the driver pulled out onto Westheimer, and at that point, he blacked out, had some kind of medical emergency, and lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle then went across Westheimer, and struck a pickup truck.
As the driver was coming into the parking lot, there was a man, approximately 30-year-old, who was struck, causing him to fly into the air, then the driver crashed into the business, officials said.
Police said the man that was struck in the parking lot took himself to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition.
An accident investigation is being conducted as part of the crash.
Authorities said the driver of the vehicle did not show any signs of intoxication.
What's next:
Houston police said when there is a medical episode that results in a crash, there is a form that's filled out and sent over to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The form requests a medical advisory board review the driver's license of the driver.
DPS will then typically require them to go to a doctor to get an evaluation to see if they're still fit to drive.
