Houston billionaire, John Arnold named chairman of Houston's bid for 2026 World Cup

Houston billionaire John D. Arnold has been named chairman of the Houston 2026 World Cup Bid Committee Thursday morning. Houston is one 1 of the 17 U.S.cities bidding to host the 2026 World Cup. North American host cities could make combined $5 billion in economic impact from this sporting event. Arnold was selected to lead this charge for Houston.  “We can showcase our city on a global scale” said Mayor Sylvester Turner in a press conference on Thursday morning.

Mayor Sylvester Turner, Judge Hidalgo and Houston Sports Authority made the announcement on Thursday morning about Houston's plans to become a host city for 2026 World Cup. 

Arnold said about the 2026 World Cup bid, "This is going to be a competitive process. There are 17 cities that are competing for 10 spots. I’m confident in the success of the bid." Arnold added that Houston has so many qualities that will give it a winning bid, "We have great infrastructure, a vibrant fan zone surrounded by hotels, easy transportation to the game, world class facility…and most importantly Houston hospitality." 

Arnold said that Houston has an international presence that's a unique fit for soccer.  "Houston is a city with global presence. It’s the most diverse, big city in America. I’m thrilled to be a part of this effort.."
