HOUSTON - Thousands of residents in Houston are still seeking help after floods washed away most everything they own.
Dozens of Houston flood victims are in need of immediate help. Monday night they waited anxiously for Mayor Sylvester Turner to take the stage.
Mayor Turner addressed the efforts that are being made local and said the faith based community has teamed up with city leaders to make cleanup and recovery possibly city wide.
"There are two major priorities that I said: one, was to provide people with hot housing-- either on a temporary or permanent basis. The second priority is debris removal," said Turner.
He added the city has responded quickly to the needs of those without homes and essential items. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said as of today Houston is also receiving federal aide
"I'm very excited to announce we have the federal and national disaster declaration," said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. "Thank you president Obama it was done within 24 hours. That means we will now have individual assistance that will cover all of the people that have been harmed."
HEB also announced their scheduled "Flood of Love Shopping" weekend that will take place April 29-May 1. They and asking Houston residents to purchase "Care Bags" at their local stores to be donated to needy families.
