HISD concerned about state takeover of 10 district schools after accountability ratings

HOUSTON, TX - As Houston students get ready to go back to school in about two weeks, all eyes will be on HISD today.  The district received its ratings from the Texas Education Agency (TEA). After release of that accountability rating report, there are real concerns that the state may consider taking over the schools.

HISD leaders are now discussing the results and TEA's warning of a potential takeover of 10 schools.  The district received a warning that if any school failed again, a state manager must be hired to oversee and direct the entire district.  District leaders do have time to fix things before it's too late. They say they've already made improvements. In 2015, about 70 schools weren't making the grade.

Last week district leaders predicted the rankings that HISD received from the state today.  It shows less than 10 schools are under performing. The Texas Education Agency warned HISD of a potential takeover because about a dozen schools haven't met standards for 3 years in a row. HISD has until August 15, 2018 to make sure that the 10 Houston schools currently on under-performing list are up to par. The 10 schools that need improvement include Henry Middle School, Mading Elementary School, Wesley Elementary School, Dogan Elementary School, Highland Heights Elementary School, Woodson K-8, Blackshear Elementary School, Wheatley High School, Worthing High School and Kashmere High School.
