HOUSTON - The Harris County Sheriff's Office is now investigating the shooting death of a 20-year-old man killed in a home invasion as capital murder.
It happened overnight on the 11900 block of Kingslake Forest Drive in northeast Harris County.
BACKGROUND: 20-year-old man killed while at his brother's Harris County home alone
"I didn’t know it was gunfire. I thought it was fireworks actually because it was so much," said Sharon Benjamin, a next-door neighbor.
After hearing the commotion next door, Benjamin peeped out her window late Wednesday night, alarmed to see an ambulance arrive. Her neighborhood was struck by crime, again.
"We’ve had some recent incidents of someone breaking into cars," Benjamin said. "Actually, my home was burglarized a short time ago. They stole my weapon, unfortunately."

This time, the situation turned violent. Her next-door neighbor, 20-year-old Francisco Orozco was shot and killed in his bed.
"When deputies arrived at the house, the house was secure until they got into the backyard," said HCSO Sgt. Ben Beall. "They saw that a window had been broken out of the back, so when the brother arrived at the house, they made entry into the house. They found that the victim had been shot and was deceased."
Investigators said the man was home alone and called his family around 11:30 PM worried someone was breaking in.
Less than three hours before that call was made, Orozco’s brother and sister-in-law had left for the hospital to deal with a medical emergency.
Harris County Sheriff’s Deputies believe someone tried to break inside, thinking no one was home.
"He contacted his brother by phone, told him that he thought there was somebody trying to break into the house. He called his brother at least twice and his brother told him to call 911," said Beall. "At this point, it doesn't appear anything was taken from the house does look like there was somebody did search part of the house. But you know, at this point, we can't tell what, what, if anything, is missing."

Beall added that nobody else was home at the time. There were also two large dogs present in the back but were not disturbed.
Benjamin believes the uptick in crimes is a result of stress from the pandemic.
"I think it’s a reflection of the times of what’s going on in the world. People have a sense of desperation. That’s unfortunate," Benjamin said.
