HOUSTON (FOX 26) - It just took seconds for bullets to shatter bones and tear flesh, but the recovery will take much, much longer.
Attorney General Ken Paxton came to visit Captain Wes Hensley who is also undergoing surgeries for multiple gunshot wounds, as well as the injured Harris County deputy.
"It's a little surreal walking in and talking to men who have just been through such a really harrowing experience," said Paxton.
Deputy James Smejkal has endured several operations to save his right middle finger, and the prognosis is good, but hospital administrator Nathan Deal says it's too early to tell for either patient.
"It's hard to estimate how long the recovery time will be, but so far they're both in wonderful spirits and so far the reports from our surgeons is very positive," Deal says.
Meanwhile, investigators are trying to piece together exactly what happened when the men went to arrest Daniel Trevino. The members of the fugitive task force knew it was a potentially explosive situation, but they had done this many times before. How did the gunfight start? Whose pistol did Trevino use? one from an officer? And most importantly, what lessons can they learn from this?
"Obviously it went down very quickly and so I know there are different questions that have come up about what gun was used and all that. I haven't had a full briefing from our investigators," said Sheriff Ed Gonzales.
