Greenville officer killed in ambush shooting
The Greenville Police Department in Hunt County is grieving the loss of a fellow officer. Officer Cooper Dawson was killed in the line of duty overnight. Police said he was ambushed by a suspect he was chasing.
Greenville, TX - A Greenville police officer was shot and killed while chasing a suspect on Monday night.
According to the Greenville Police Department, Officer Cooper Dawson stopped a vehicle just before 8 p.m. in the 3500 block of Picket Street.
The suspect took off running, and Officer Dawson pursued the suspect on foot.

Police said while the officer was in a wooded area behind homes, the suspect ambushed him and shot him multiple times.
"Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson displayed exceptional courage, returning fire, and striking the suspect," Greenville police said in a statement.
Police confirmed that both the officer and the suspect were taken to the hospital.
Officer Dawson sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and side. He died after being airlifted to Medical City Plano.
"We are heartbroken over the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly put his life on the line to serve and protect our community," said Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith. "We ask that you keep Officer Dawson’s family, our department, and the Greenville community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."
Greenville police said Officer Dawson was a highly respected member of the department. He also previously worked for the Garland Police Department.
His death is the first line-of-duty death in Greenville in more than 100 years.
The suspect’s name and condition have not yet been released.
