George Floyd funeral photos: Family, notable figures gather together to say goodbye

Family, friends and notable figures gathered in Houston on Tuesday, June 9 to pay their respects to George Floyd. On May 25, Floyd, an unarmed black man, died after Derek Chauvin, a Minneapolis police officer, knelt on his neck for an extended period of time.

On Monday, June 8, members of the public gathered to pay their respects to Floyd at a memorial. Last week, a memorial event in Minneapolis brought together members of Floyd’s family as well as notable civil rights leaders including Rev. Al Sharpton.

Floyd’s death has sparked a surge of protests against police brutality in major cities across the U.S. and world, as well as renewed conversation on the need of police reform. The protests have ranged from peaceful to violent, with governors and state leaders requesting assistance from the National Guard in some instances.

While the service was private, at least 50 people gathered outside the Fountain of Praise church to pay their respects. Some held signs with messages including "Black Lives Matter” and “Together because of George Floyd.”

Several police officers from Texas Southern University stood guard at the sanctuary entrance, wearing face masks printed with Floyd's dying words. The historically black school is next to the Houston housing project where Floyd grew up.

The mourners inside the church included Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green, both Democrats from the Houston area, and the city's police chief, Art Acevedo.

Dozens of Floyd's family members, most dressed in white, were led into the sanctuary by the Rev. Al Sharpton, the civil rights activist. They were joined by rapper Trae tha Truth, who helped organize a march last week in Houston attended by 60,000 people.
